Les Amis de la montagne
About
Les Amis de la montagne is the only citizen organization dedicated to protecting, improving and promoting the sustainability of Montreal’s Mount Royal through:
- community involvement,
- environmental education,
- environmental stewardship,
- advocacy.
Through its natural, landscape and cultural richness, Mount Royal is fundamental to the quality of life of Montrealers. Our role in the community is one of representation and education based on an in-depth understanding of the mountain and issues it faces. Les Amis de la montagne take action to preserve this exceptional green lung for present and future generations.
Our Impact
Last year, donations helped us:
- RECORD : More than 3,000 volunteer hours, plant over 22 species and more than 1,500 trees and shrubs
- RAISE AWARENESS : Among over 14,000 people on how to protect the mountain’s environmental, natural and cultural heritage
- WELCOME : over 8,500 youth on the mountain, more than 1,400 volunteers, 300,000 visitors to our free exhibition The thousand faces of Mount Royal: Olmsted, the visionary.
- HOST : more than 100 guided walks, 12 family activities, 300 educational activities and cultural mediation.
Les Amis de la montagne also plays a crucial advocacy role in preserving Mount Royal’s cultural and natural heritage. Les Amis was founded in 1986 by a group of citizens and organizations concerned with preserving the natural character of Mount Royal, and opposed to the construction of a telecommunications tower for tourism purposes in the park.
Since then, we have worked closely with public authorities, institutional landowners, associations, businesses and the community to preserve the integrity of Mount Royal.

- Research and development: ensuring the sustainability of natural areas in concert with other Mount Royal institutions, as well as connectivity with other natural areas in the region,
- Environmental education: raise awareness among future protectors of Mount Royal with our day camp, our forest school for families, school programs, our information kiosks,
- Cultural mediation: offer opportunities for rejuvenation and wonder on the mountain tain – discovery hikes, shinrin-yoku, nature-art and photography workshops and other cultural mediation events.
- Advocacy: ensure representation of interests of the mountain with public and private institutions to guarantee the safeguarding of cultural and natural heritage, through briefs, consultations, communities of practice or public speaking engagements.
